A 300 year history...
The Dumfries Arms Hotel is a contemporary hotel that has a rich 300 year history behind it. Situated in the ancient burgh of Cumnock, the hotel has played host to many colourful characters over the years. These include Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns having spent many a night at the old hotel bar, entertaining the locals and Sir Walter Scott, the poet and novelist who frequented the hotel. Scott was even quoted to say ‘Old Cumnock, where the beds are as hard as planks, sir’… How times have changed.
The old hotel has undergone a complete transformation and now boasts one of Ayrshire’s largest and most stylish wedding venues along with 26 elegant bedrooms, our popular restaurant and a relaxed lounge bar with our private dining room for those special occasions.
The Royal Hotel was built in 1892 by R J Barrowman, and has proven over the years to be a figurehead of Cumnock town centre. The upper floor has 16 en suite bedrooms, offering excellent accommodation for every requirement. All rooms have their own unique style, due to the traditional layout of the building. The Royal hotel has a long history of entertaining guests.

The Coach House Café lies at the heart of Dumfries House estate and is a favourite destination among visitors in all weather. Warming soup, paninis and hot drinks are served as welcome relief when the temperature drops or the rain arrives, while dining al fresco on the expansive patio area or opting for takeaway refreshments to be enjoyed throughout the estate proves a popular choice on warmer, sunny days.
The café, a beautiful converted coachhouse and stables, is typically open seven days a week from 10.00am-4.30pm. Opening hours may vary during Winter or when restrictions are in place.
A selection of homemade soups, scones, sandwiches, paninis, and jacket potatoes can be complemented by an array of cold drinks or freshly-brewed coffee or tea and followed by traybakes and cakes. All of these staples of the menu are freshly prepared on the day, and many are made from scratch in the café by our talented bakers and kitchen staff. Seasonal specials grace the menu throughout the year. As a licensed premises, the café also serves a small selection of beers and wines.
The Coach House Café is easy to reach on foot or by car, with car-parking available outside and the estate’s main public car park just a short walk away. Adjacent to the café lies The Adventure Playpark, The Maze, The Visitor Centre, The Arboretum and Dumfries House itself.
Booking is not required but customers may have a short wait for a table on busier days.
